Guys, I am going down to Marathon for the 7 mile bridge race on April 17th.  As such, the non-runners are looking for a Tarpon/Flats charter at that time.

1)  Any recommendations?

2)  Most charters seem to be 4 hours based on tide AM/PM.  What tide are they looking for on these trips?  Is it around a change? only outgoing?

Any assistance is appreciated!

Call Randy Rode. http://www.roderunnersportfishing.com/ (305) 289-0540

Or Buddy LaPointe, http://www.fishin-buddy.com/ (305) 743-2871

Are you actually running in the Bridge Run? If so, wave to me. I'll be in the chopper.

Can't help you on the fishing but definitely check out Keys Fisheries (http://www.keysfisheries.com/restaurant.html ) for dinner.  It's my favorite restaurant in the keys.

Excellent Andy -  I'll call them.

Thanks SJ. I've never been there and after reading the site, I can't believe I missed it!

Chris - down just Friday afternoon and back Sunday. We rented a big house on the oceanside and have 10 people coming down.

disclaimer - I do not run. I fish. :-)  and watch my single friends pick up girls drinking beer after running 7 miles...

I second SJ's Keys Fisheries recommendation. Make sure and get there early on a weekday 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. because you can get stone crab claws hot. Now, we're not talking about reheating the crab claws. We're talking about eating them right out of the first boil and they are very, very, very good that way.

Wow...never had hot stone crabs.  Maybe that's why I don't like them so much.

I don't want to oversell Keys Fisheries but its kinda like a Two Georges with really good food.  I always get their signature lobster reuben.  Sounds weird but very good.

Other good eateries in the Marathon area include Seven Mile Grill, Castaway, Key Colony Beach Inn, Barracuda Grill. The Sunset Grille (formerly Chappy's) is on the east end of the Seven Mile Bridge. I haven't heard anything yet about the food, but the location is quite nice.

First of the rise and last of the fall.... most guides in Marathon are going to take you to the bridge, anchor and bait fish.  If possible check the tides and choose the most optimum tide near sunrise or sunset.  I've spent many looong days off Islamorada, Indian Key and Long Key chasing Tarpon with flies and bait, if I can help let me know.

TT - That helps...need to plan AM/PM around the run.

We called Andy's recommendations. One was purchased by Tackle Box. Looks like we are set! Maybe we can set it up so Andy can take our pick while fishin' the bridge during the run. :-)

The charter folks are concerned this year will be slow do the water temp, but I can't imagine it be that bad. I've Tarpon fished in Key West in April in the past, but not Marathon.

Can't wait to go to Key Fisheries!

Hey guys,

On the same note I just booked a little work/vacation trip for the fam and I. We will be staying in Key Largo. I am all set on the dinner/lunch and watering holes and man do I crave those Lobster Reuben's and its right across from the hosptial I will be working in. I was going to try to get my boat down there but If I do that I tend to fish more than I spend time with my family! So I will be looking for a half dayer as well. I was just curious how much coin will I be dropping for the trip and if it is worth it this time of year? Thanks for the info as always!

Thought I would put in my thoughts.

Glad you got a charter James and I hope it is a great one for you. By Mid April we are "all" hoping to see Tarpon here, but not yet. I have only jumped two so far. Normally they are numerious by Feb. 1st and charters booking heavy, but not yet, water is still to cold. It is getting better but will take time, still have a month for it to get hot.

Currently most Tarpon are in deeper waters yet were it is warmer. Boot Key Harbour is 64 degress yesterday, about 69 at Marathon Light. So most are doing the smaller eating type fish, Mangrove, Spanish Mac's, Lanes and Mutton. There are so many Grouper of all types being caught they are hard to stay way from. I caught six before I got one Mangrove, figure that one out. I ahve caught no SHarks either which tells me they are in warmer waters as well. So if you can get off the beach with the winds your doing great as the fish are out there.

Andy if you see a Light Blue Sailfish, get me an aerial shot will you, i'll be out there at the bridge as well. Have a great time and contact me if you get free time Andy.

Booked with Capt Buddy LaPointe out of Duck Key for Saturday during the race. Will provide a play-by-play next week.

Sonney - are you on vacation in the keys or work/chartering?

Jim: If you're near the bridge and you see a helicopter, it'll likely be me.
